Lars Samuelson's research is focused on the growth of semiconductor nanostructures, primarily nanowires, and the study of their optical and transport properties. Special emphasis is put on developing novel means of combining top-down patterning methodologies and bottom-up growth of nanowires to realize perfectly-ordered arrays of nanowires. Such controlled materials structures are of interest for a multitude of basic optical and transport physics studies as well as for applications toward nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, solar cells and solid-state lightning (LEDs).

Specific research topics include:

  • design and growth of complex nanowire structures.
  • novel approaches for the growth of nanowires.
  • electro-optical studies of single quantum objects.
  • nanowire-based probes for neuroscience studies.
  • nanowire arrays for photo-voltaics applications.
  • nanowire arrays for solid-state lightning (LED) applications.

Lars also teaches introductory-level classes for the undergraduate program Engineering Nanoscience, a program at the Faculty of Engineering which he founded in 2002.

Lars is the Scientific leader of the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University (nmC@LU). He is the Founder of several spin-off companies, such as Qunano AB, Sol Voltaics AB and Glo AB, for which he is also the CSO (Chief Scientific Officer). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and of the American Physical Society (Materials Physics), a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, KVA (Physics class) and of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, IVA. In 2008 he was appointed Einstein Professor by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has published >500 papers, has >14000 citations and an h-index of >60.
