Knut heads the Nanocrystals and Epitaxy group within the Division of Solid State Physics. The group focuses on the following research areas:

• application of aerosol techniques to create novel nanostructures.
• growth of one-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures (nanowires).
• improved understanding and control of nanowire growth.
• utilization of nanowire structures for photovoltaics.

Knut also coordinates the FP7 EU-project AMON-RA, which concerns the development of a new type of solar cell and is done in collaboration with SOL Voltaics, a start-up company in Lund. He is currently an associated editor of the Journal of Crystal Growth. 

Within the Nanometer Structure Consortium (nmC@LU) Knut coordinates the core resource Education. At Lund University he has been one of the architects behind the Engineering Nanoscience (Teknisk Nanovetenskap) program. From 2008-2010 he was the Director of doctoral studies for the departments clustered within Research Board 1 at the Faculty of Engineering (Automatic Control, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics). He is also a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Nano Education. In 2011, he received the Lund University Pedagogic Prize for Distinguished Contributions in Teaching.

Knut is currently the Head of the Department of Physics.
