Heiner Linke's research group uses experimental and numerical methods to study phenomena in diverse systems such as semiconductor nanostructures, biomolecular systems and fluids. A common theme is the physics of ratchets and Brownian motors: the question how thermal fluctuations in non-equilibrium systems can be harvested to produce useful work, for example in thermoelectricity or in molecular motors. Specific research topics include:

  • thermoelectric effects in low-dimensional systems, including nanowires.
  • fundamental low-temperature electron transport studies.
  • artificial bio-molecular motors based on DNA and proteins.
  • self-propelled fluids.
  • optical trapping.

Heiner tought introductory-level classes for the undergraduate programs Engineering Physics and Engineering Nanoscience between fall term 2009 and spring term 2020.

Heiner is currently the Deputy dean (prorektor) at Faculty of Engineering, LTH. He was Director of NanoLund, the Center for Nanoscience at Lund University between 2013 and 2020. From 2009 until 2012 he was the Head of the Division of Solid State Physics. He came to Lund in 2009 from the Department of Physics at the University of Oregon where he held a tenured faculty position. Prior to his time in Oregon, Heiner was an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of New South Wales in Sydney between 1998 and 2001.
